Athletic Trainers and Firefighters

We know the important role athletic trainers play in the locker room. After all, they were there for us in times of great pain in any and all of our sports. Every single slight pain or sense of discomfort they were there, ready to help in anyway they could. Their importance is expected in sports, but their skills translate well to other physically demanding jobs, and one of the most physically demanding jobs are firefighters. Athletic trainers play a crucial role in their physical health and well-being, just like they are to athletes. Firefighting is an extremely demanding job, one that requires strength, stamina, and resilience, very similar to the qualities required in professional athletes. Because of this, firefighters are often at risk of injuries, making the role of athletic trainers essential to prevention and rehabilitation.

Firefighters obviously face a number of high stress situations in their occupation, and these situations can easily result in muscle strains, pulled muscles, or ligament damage that might not be immediately obvious. Athletic trainers, with their expertise and years of practice and study on the human body and exercise science, can diagnose these issues and give a number of exercises to help alleviate discomfort to get firefighters back to their life-saving best. However, even though injury rehabilitation is important, perhaps an even more important asset athletic trainers provide are the strategies in long-term wellness they are able to offer.

As many athletes know, preventative exercises are absolutely essential to a long and healthy career, even if pursuing sports is no longer a desire. The constant high intensity situations the body is put through growing up can and will come back and haunt many athletes if they do not take care of themselves, leading to unnecessary stress and potentially surgery. To save time, money, and to preserve your body, time must be spent on preventative exercises, and this goes for firefighters as well. The firehouse is an occupation where not just your job is on the line; other's lives depend on your physical well-being and health. To save as many lives as possible, including their own, firefighters need to be in the best shape they can be, and athletic trainers' work can help make sure they are prepared for the daily physical challenges the job has to offer.

Similar to athletic trainers in the high school setting, trainers in the firehouse can provide immediate care during or after calls, ensuring that firefighters stay healthy and injury free. In high school, trainers made sure their athletes do not return too soon, leading to fewer long-term injuries and faster recoveries, allowing athletes to grow and perform at their best. In the firehouse, athletic trainers can offer similar benefits, leading to longer careers and more lives saved. The San Antonio Fire Department recognizes the benefits of having talented athletic trainers in one of the most physically demanding occupations, leading them to solicit proposals for athletic trainer services for their fire department.
